Autumn 88

The time is autumn eighty eight
The time has come to close the gate
Life's weary toil has worn me down
I have no need to wear a crown

The summer passed by all too soon
With many weary afternoon
Spent in loneliness and pain
Seeing only endless rain

Oh! Lakeland, will I never see
Your hills and lakes to comfort me?
Last year I could have walked your shore
Alas, I cannot any more

For time has swiftly passed me by
I know I cannot even try
To think of going home again
To feel once more the gentle rain

So many places I long to see
Just once more I'd happy be
But now I know that all too well
That time alone will once more tell
